De volta pra casa.../ Back Home....

Good Morning all!

I write now from São Paulo’s airport: I am waiting my flight to Belo Horizonte, so now I have time to write you about our fantastic days at our THREE Boats, which took us the last 5 days to incredible and unimaginable places inside the Amazon jungle. It was a “dream come true” of most exchange students and even for us!

The last time I wrote, we were in Manaus leaving on boat for the beginning of our big adventure. After floating 10 km down the Negro River at our house (boat), we arrived at the spectacular meeting of the Waters: for sure it is a beautiful phenomenon! I call the boat as HOUSE because we stays literally 5 days (4 nights) living on a boat: all meals, shower and even sleep…at the boat! We stopped next at January Ecological Park, where we found the "Vitorias-Régias" Lake, a plant also known as the Queen of the Lakes. This plant is really beautiful and it is the symbol of the Amazon! At night, we slept on hammocks. I have to confess that the first night for who is not used to sleep like this is really uncomfortable. You do not find position to sleep; try to turn the side, to change position, listen some music, read a book, make everything to try to sleep! The other nights are much better: as you are tired because of the tours, waking up early, etc, the hammock seems like a very luxury 5 stars hotel bed and the best: YOU LITERALLY sleep surrounded by the sounds of nature!

On Monday we had the so awaited Survival course in the jungle! We woke up early and divided the group in two smaller groups, and started our trek with the company of the army reserves through the forest. During the day we learned how to survive in the forest; make fire, shelters, and find food and water! The students survived and loved it! At night, after a delicious dinner, we picked up small canoes to see the Amazon at night!! We saw and touched some alligators and had a quiet time in the middle of Negro River, totally in the dark to reflect in silence on what we can do now and in future to preserve this wonderful place!

On Tuesday we woke up 5 am and pick up canoes to see the sunrise: I can not explain to you how exciting this is. Suddenly, you find yourself in the middle of the Amazon, with a multitude of water on all sides. You are there, “alone” in the middle of this wonderful place and completely lost in your thoughts: who knew that one day you'd be there ...
Then, after a delicious breakfast we went to swim with the Pink “dolphins”!! All students were really excited, took a lot of picture and make some videos of it!! For sure, a unique experience!!!

On Wednesday we went to an Indian community called São Tomé (this community participated of a very popular TV show in Brazil: Lar doce Lar). The guys played soccer with the locals while the girls played with the native children. It was really nice to see the cultural exchange (at the soccer, of course, our gringos lost…when talking about soccer, BRAZIL IS BRAZIL)!!  At night, the last of the trip, we had a fantastic Luau in a small beach with all the infra structure. We had barbecue, light and a lot of music! Everyone danced a lot at the boats and went to bed really tired!

Yesterday we woke up and stopped at another Indian community called Topé: they made a beautiful presentation for us, and it was really amazing!! In the afternoon, after lunch, we started our journey back at our “floating house” to Manaus, where everybody took their flights back to their host towns at night. All disembarks ended up well.

I would like to REALLY REALLY thank all the students for the nice trip: girls, I will miss our late and LONG talks about everything, specially horror stories and anacondas…! I will REALLY miss this and everyone! I would also like to thank our Chaperone Marcelo (District 4560), for being so kind and nice with us and for taking really care of the students. Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart! And of course, I want to thank Rotary International, for the opportunity that we have to be in such an enjoyable mission, which is to show our wonderful BRAZIL to the exchange students!

SAUDADE, word that just exist only at the Portuguese language and only who can feel can explain!!

Thank you very much for the attention hugs and see you in next adventure!!
