Presidente Figueiredo/Manaus
Bom Dia!!
Hoje faz mais um dia QUENTE aqui na Amazônia....claro! Ainda estamos em Presidente Figueiredo, mas vamos partir daqui a pouco para Manaus. Esses dias que ficamos aqui foram ótimos!
Quarta-feira começaram nossos passeios por aqui. Fomos primeiro para a Caverna do Maruaga, onde descemos embaixo de chuva os 90 degraus que levam até a caverna. Ela é muito conhecida, pois é bem diferenciada! Alem de ser formada de Arenito, tem água e floresta: é uma raridade!! Em seguida nos esbaldamos nas corredeiras do Urubuí!
Ontem cedo partimos para uma pequena cidade vizinha a Presidente Figueiredo: Balbina, uma cidade planejada para morarem as pessoas que trabalharam na década de 70e 80, na construção da Usina Hidrelétrica de lá, que hoje abastece bem menos de um terço de Manaus. Lá, visitamos o centro de pesquisas de Quelônios e Mamíferos, onde observamos varias tartarugas e o peixe-boi da Amazônia. Eles tem peixes bois muito grandes, e um deles chega a pesar 350 kg. Após o almoço nadamos bastante na Cachoeira do Santuário, chamada assim porque os índios que habitavam a região usavam o local para fazer suas preces: o local é um paraíso ecológico!
Agora todos estão tomando café da manhã e em seguida vamos para Manaus: nossa aventura está apenas começando!!

Good Morning!
Today is another REALLY HOT day here at the Amazon…of course!! We are still in Presidente Figueredo and we are leaving in a few minutes for Manaus. The days that we stayed here were great and everything went as planned.
Our tour here started last Wednesday. First we went to Maruaga’s cave. With much excitement, we climbed down a 90 step hill in very slippery mud (because of the rain) to get to the cave. It’s a different place, because it is Sandstone cave that has water and forest: it is really rare!! Just after, we had a lot of fun swimming at Urubuí waterfall!
Yesterday really early we left for a small city close to Presidente Figueiredo, Balbina, a city planned for construction workers in the 1970’s and 1980’s who were building the hydroelectric power plant, that now supplies with all of its energy LESS than 1/3 of what Manaus needs. There we visited the Freshwater Mammals and Turtle Research Center, where we observed turtles and freshwater manatees from the Amazon. They have HUGE manatees there, and one of then reached 350kg weigh! After lunch, we swam a lot at Santuário Waterfall, which is called like that because it was where the Indian used to perform their rituals and ceremonies: the place is an ecological paradise!
At this moment, everyone is having breakfast and then we will leave for Manaus. Our adventure is just at the beginning!!

Chegamos em Presidente Figueiredo!! / We Arrived at Presidente Figueiredo!!
Boa Tarde!!
Escrevo diretamente de Presidente Figueiredo, cidade localizada à 107 km de Manaus e conhecida como a “Terra das Cachoeiras”. O território é do tamanho da Holanda e possui mais de 100 cachoeiras dentro da selva amazônica! Chegamos nessa madrugada, e o embarque de todos até Manaus foi muito tranqüilo!
Hoje pela manhã tivemos nossa Orientação Geral da viagem, quando passamos dicas de saúde, de como aproveitar melhor a viagem, o dinheiro entre outras dicas que facilitam muito a vida dos estudantes e da coordenação.
Estamos agora saindo para os primeiros passeios por aqui e todos estão muito animados afinal...é a AMAZÔNIA!!!!
Assim que tiver nova oportunidade, escrevo para vocês contando as novidades.

Good Afternoon!
I am writing from Presidente Figueiredo, city 107 km far from Manaus and known as the “Waterfall land”! The area here is the size of Holland and has over 100 waterfalls in the Amazon jungle!
We arrived here 4:00 am, and all embarks until Manaus were ok!
This morning, after breakfast, we had our general orientation for the trip, when we gave important points like how to take care of your health and money, and how to enjoy the best that the trip has to offer.
We are leaving the hotel now for our first activities here, and everybody is very excited because…WE ARE IN THE AMAZON!!!!
As soon as I get another opportunity, I’ll write you back telling the news.
